Disclaimer: Violin repair and restoration is a unique craft which requires experience, practice and skill.  (Not all violin makers are good restorers and vice versa).  Restoring old violins can take weeks and in some cases months, as the process is painstaking and can't be rushed.  Consequently, the cost of repairs to valuable violins and bows will reflect this.  Those who are qualified to work on old/valuable Italian violins are very few and far between and they will justly deserve to be very well paid for their skills in crack repair and varnish retouching especially.  These skills in particular are very niche and require talent, qualifications and lots of experience in working on similar instruments.  Costs of repairs to such instruments may run into the thousands, but owing to their value and provenance, it would be necessary to ensure only the finest restorers work on them.

If your violin's value is in excess of £3000, I would suggest that you reach out to a qualified luthier or professional restorer, as they will be better placed to give you a detailed estimate of costs and more importantly, be able to undertake and complete any repairs required to the highest standard.

However, if your violin doesn't fit the description above and you wish to repair it more economically, then I can help!   Although I am not a professionally trained luthier or restorer, I have worked on many violins in the last number of years and honed my skills as a repairer and restorer of good quality instruments.  As a traditional Irish fiddle player, I have a unique advantage when it comes to adjusting string action etc to ensure the playability and tone of your violin will be maximised.

Looking after your violin/fiddle.

Where to store your violin

The tone from your violin is affected by a number of variables including some that are difficult to control (eg) temperature and humidity! I have heard numerous recounts down the years from musicians who left their treasured instrument in a car on a sunny day only to return to something that no longer resembled a violin!  It is very sad when this happens, and in some cases a repair is not feasible.  It goes without saying, that where you store your fiddle is important; keep clear of radiators when at home and out of direct/strong sunlight when at a Feis or festival.

Old violins that have remained in cases for prolonged periods become vulnerable to woodworm infestations (particularly if stored in darker, humid places).  This can be very serious for not just the violin but for the home!
If you have a violin with woodworm holes in it, then it needs to be removed from your home without delay, in case the infestation travels to other your furniture, flooring or roof.  Violins with woodworm are best disposed of eg. burned in a fire if they are not valuable.

Falls/Knocks: If your violin falls to the ground, it is likely that the bridge position will be affected or worse still, a crack to the spruce top may result.  A bridge can be easily replaced, but a crack to the violin will be more difficult.  Often, the violin will need to be opened and need glued and restudded / cleated internally.  To guard against such falls, ensure your fiddle is returned to its case when not being played.
