Mirecourt, French Violin from the Georges Apparut Atelier 1932
Georges Apparut’s workshop in Mirecourt was a prestigious, small-scale studio known for its elite craftsmanship and traditional techniques. While he supervised larger artistic productions for firms like Laberte-Humbert, his personal workshop typically employed only a few highly skilled makers and a single apprentice at a time to maintain strict quality control. He mentored over twenty apprentices, including legendary figures like Jacques Français and his eventual successor, Paul Hilaire, who took over the business in 1948. Instruments from this workshop carry a distinctive Apparut Label/Crest, which can be seen in this example here.
This particular instrument is finished in the style of J.B Vuillaume, with his signature amber/reddish varnish. It is set up with Helicore Strings and Wittner tailpiece and plays with good volume and resonsance. There is a certain quality to the tone that is very satisfying to play. A fine example from a great workshop!
