Orchard Violins, Ballymoyer

Eugene Langonet Violin, Nantes 1954 (OV260419)

Eugène Langonet (1875–1959) was a master French luthier who established a renowned workshop in Nantes in 1910 after refining his craft at W.E. Hill & Sons in London and with major makers in Paris. His violins are celebrated for their powerful, balanced tone and elegant French construction, typically featuring transparent orange-brown varnish and labels marking his Nantes residency. A multi-award winner at national exhibitions, Langonet’s instruments—including violas and cellos—are now much sought after.

This violin is Numbered 289 and iron branded internally too.  He sometimes used his older 'Paris' labels but would cross out Paris and insert Nantes instead (which can be seen in this particular example, which is also dated and signed by him in 1954.

This instrument has a warm, mature and full tone with good power.  It really is a beautifully made violin, with carefully selected tonewoods, which can be seen in the photographs.  Set up with Helicore Strings and a Wittner tailpiece, it really is a  lovely instrument to play and suitable for a committed musician.
